One of our biggest questions is reserved for the untitled Avengers: Infinity War sequel, aka Avengers 4, due in May 2019 – namely, what will its title actually be.
We have some theories…
Avengers: Infinity Gauntlet?
At the time of Guardians of the Galaxy vol 2's 2017 release, Gamora actress Zoe Saldana let slip that the sequel to Avengers: Infinity War would be called 'Infinity Gauntlet'. So that settles it, right?
Maybe not. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and directors Anthony and Joe Russo when they say that the title hasn't been revealed yet because it's a spoiler for Infinity War.Calling it 'Avengers: Infinity Gauntlet' isn't a spoiler because we know that the Infinity Gauntlet is in Infinity War,
Avengers: Secret Invasion?
One theory that raises its head from time to time is that Avengers 4 will be based on Secret Invasion. This was the comic-book event that followed up the original Civil War at Marvel Comics, in which it was revealed that people across Earth – including some superheroes – had been replaced in the past by Skrulls – a race of shapeshifting aliens who had managed to make themselves completely undetectable.
Interestingly, the Skrulls will appear in 2019's Captain Marvel, which is set in the 1990s but is also setting up for her appearance in Avengers 4, which arrives in cinemas shortly afterwards. Carol Danvers (aka Captain Marvel) is closely related to the alien Kree, who are basically the Skrulls' archenemies. Maybe her film is setting the scene for the revelation that Earth has been infiltrated.
Avengers: Secret Wars?
If Disney plans wants a big Marvel name to round out Phase Three (and most likely bid goodbye to some of their biggest stars), they couldn't do much better than Secret Wars. The original Secret Wars was released in 1984, and is widely considered to be the first major comic-book event of its kind (it was also created to help promote a new line of action figures, but never mind).
Another event of the same name was released in 2015, concluding two years of Marvel storytelling with the (temporary) destruction of the multiverse.
It's strange to say, but the details of the stories aren't as relevant as their setting – in the original, a powerful being called The Beyonder forces heroes and villains to battle each other, and in the second an all-powerful Doctor Doom creates a world out of broken shards of reality. That setting is Battleworld, a composite planet where everyone can fight it out.
We wouldn't put money on it, but out of the options available, Secret Wars seems the likeliest choice. Or perhaps the film really will be called Avengers: Iron Man, Captain America and Thor Die Horribly.
